Bacup Borough 1 (Wayne Morrison 63)

Holker Old Boys took advantage of AFC Blackpool’s game at home to St Helens was one of 5 games in the Hallmark Security North West Counties 1st Division to fall victim to the Weather. They were made to wait for it mind with kick off delayed by 1hr and 15mins due to the Referee presuming the game was off and not Leaving his house in Lancaster until the Club contacted him to see where he was.

When the game eventually got under way it was a close thought contest, Bacup were the first to come close to opening the scoring, Top Scorer Matthew Bryan coming close after a mistake at the back let him in but his shot lacked conviction and was easily saved by Christopher Pearce in the Holker Goal. Holker then came close themselves, Skipper Gareth Smith hitting a shot from distance which rattled the top of the cross bar before dropping down behind Brandon Collins who was unable to get a shot on goal.

The Breakthrough was worth the wait though, a throw in on the right hand side landed at the feet of John Paul Stanway, he played a lovely one two with Brad Hubbold before slotting the ball elegantly past the Bacup Number 1 Nick Sharples to give the Stags the Lead.

Holker then took control of the 1st half but were unable to break down a tough Bacup defence led by Captain Adrian Bellamy.

2nd Half however saw Holker come out charging, the best chance of the half came when a ball into the box was flicked into the air by Man Of the Match Nathan Reid then from nowhere Reid back healed the ball goalwards forcing Sharples into a full stretch save to turn the ball away from the top corner. just 2 minutes later though Reid was not going to be denied for a 2nd time, Gareth Smith played a great ball across to Brandon Collins on the left hand side, he carried it forward to the corner of the box before flicking the ball back to Wing Back Joshua Woodend, his ball into the box came to Reid who slotted the ball with ease beyond the reach of Sharples to double Holker’s lead.

Bacup will of been thinking they were on the way to another heavy defeat however just 2minutes later they were back in the game.
A ball in the box was missed by Holker Keeper Pearce, Wayne Morrison collected the ball with his back to goal, managed to wriggle free from the Holker Defence before slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to reduce the deficit to one.

Bacup pushed Central defender Adrian Bellamy upfront as they threw caution to the wind. Holker were unlucky not to finish the game off, Hubbold burst into the box with a winding run, putting a shot goalwards which was saved excellently by Sharples Then from the resulting corner was headed effort at the back post was cleared off the line by Bacup. Then just

In the end Holker battled well to cling on at the death with Bacup bombarding them with Balls into the Box to claim 3pts and reduce the gap to just 4pts in the Play Off Push.

Guy Heffernan was delighted with the effort of his young team especially with keeping there heads on the task despite having to wait nearly 90mins to actually play the game with the ref arriving late
